Visit Counts and Site Security

Counting Visits, Only If You Allow It

If you choose Allow in the cookie banner, your browser loads Umami Cloud, a service hosted in the United States, and sends it each page you view: the page’s address and title, the page you came from, your browser, operating system, device type, screen size and language. Umami works out your country, region and city from your network address and uses the address with your browser details to tell visits apart, without keeping the address. It sets no cookies, and we never send it your name or email. We see reports of pages, sources, devices and places, and we count that a pledge sign-up happened, not who signed.

Nothing is sent if you choose Don’t allow, or while your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track. You can change your choice at any time with Privacy Settings at the bottom of every page.

The Security Log

To keep the site available, it stops banned addresses, scanners looking for software we don’t run and anyone sending too many requests a minute. Each request it stops goes in a log with the network address, the page asked for, the browser’s description of itself (its user agent), the country our network provider reports and the time. The log is kept for 30 days, only the site’s administrators can see it, and it is used only to protect the site. To count requests a minute, the site keeps a scrambled form of the address (a keyed hash, not the address), deleted within minutes.

The site is delivered through Cloudflare, which also handles each request to protect it; see Cloudflare’s privacy policy.

Out of an abundance of caution regarding the PHP2SHELL vulnerability, we decided to transition our domain to our in-development website sooner than planned. Please do not archive or index this website in its current state.
